ABILITY Neurotech

ABILITY Neurotech (Geneva): fully implantable communication BCI with four cortical surface electrode arrays; the INTRECOM study at UMC Utrecht is recruiting people with severe paralysis.

ABILITY Neurotech (Geneva, Campus Biotech) is developing a fully implantable communication BCI for people with severe paralysis. Per the company’s study page, the implant captures neural activity through 4 electrode arrays on the brain surface and wirelessly transmits it for decoding into computer commands.

INTRECOM clinical study (recruiting)

The INTRECOM study runs at UMC Utrecht with Medical Research Ethics Committee approval. Per the company:

  • participants: ages 18 to 70 with severe paralysis and speech problems from traumatic brain injury, stroke, neurodegenerative or neuromuscular disease (including ALS); still able to communicate by other means such as eye blinking; cognitively unimpaired

  • the study lasts about one year, with home-based training and a goal of independent home use

  • clinical lead: Dr Mariska Vansteensel, Associate Professor at UMC Utrecht

  • ABILITY study page: 01

Trade press reported on Oct 12-13, 2026 that the company had begun first-in-human testing of its implant. The company’s own study page confirms the study is recruiting but does not state an implant date, so the first-in-human milestone is noted here as reported only.

  • Medical Product Outsourcing (Oct 12, 2026): 02

Notes

  • UMC Utrecht is a cataloged organization (UMC Utrecht, Ramsey group) with its own fully implanted ECoG communication BCI work; the relationship between the university group and the company is not stated in the sources used here.

What to watch

  1. First participant outcomes and whether home use is demonstrated.
  2. The wireless transmission approach, reported in trade press as an optical link.
