UC Davis, Brandman and Stavisky Group
The UC Davis group behind a 2024 intracortical speech neuroprosthesis in ALS, led by David Brandman and Sergey Stavisky, with a cataloged application using Blackrock NeuroPort arrays.
The 2024 NEJM paper lists David M. Brandman as last author and site-responsible principal investigator, and Sergey D. Stavisky as co-senior author, with first author Nicholas S. Card and authors affiliated with UC Davis. The clinical study was BrainGate2 (NCT00912041); the paper says the consent form was approved by the Mass General Brigham IRB and locally by UC Davis.
Cataloged hardware and applications
- Speech neuroprosthesis in ALS, 2024: four 64-electrode NeuroPort arrays, one participant, 125,000-word vocabulary. Device context: Utah microelectrode array.
- Related program: BrainGate consortium.
Program claims versus study evidence
Results are from one participant and are quoted on the application sheet with the authors’ own limits. Arrays are made by Blackrock Neurotech, which the paper says was not involved in data collection or reporting.
Not public or not verified
Lab size, funding beyond the grants named in the paper, and other ongoing participants are not stated in the sources used here.
