HHMI Janelia Research Campus, Neuropixels Program
Janelia Research Campus as a founding partner of the Neuropixels probes, with five cataloged probe sheets that name Janelia authors or collaborators.
The Neuropixels site says the probes were developed through an international collaboration funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the Wellcome Trust, the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and the Allen Institute for Brain Science. The Neuropixels 2.0 paper lists the Janelia Research Campus, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Ashburn, Virginia, as an author affiliation and names a Janelia author among its corresponding authors. It states that Janelia funded part of the research program, and that the imec authors are employees of imec, which sells Neuropixels probes.
This brief covers Janelia’s role as a collaborator. Probe manufacturing and sales sit with imec.
Cataloged hardware and applications
- Neuropixels 1.0 recording probe: imec with HHMI Janelia, the Allen Institute and UCL in the 2017 collaboration.
- Neuropixels 2.0 alpha single and four-shank probes: a multi-institution team including UCL, the University of Washington and Janelia.
- Neuropixels Ultra: authors from the University of Washington, the Allen Institute, Columbia, Janelia and others.
- Neuropixels 1.0 NHP long-shank probe: academic team from Columbia, Stanford, Berkeley, Caltech, Janelia and others.
- Neuropixels 2.0 Quad Base probe: Johns Hopkins, Janelia and imec preprint affiliations; see also the JHU Harris laboratory brief.
Program claims versus study evidence
These are research probes used in animals. The sheets mark which versions are commercial specifications and which are study configurations.
Not public or not verified
Which Janelia groups use each probe today, and the current funding, are not stated in the sources used here.
