Neuralink

A wireless intracortical interface, fine electrode threads and a surgical robot, with digital control as an early medical focus.

Neuralink is one of the highest-profile brain–computer interface companies. It is building an implantable, wireless intracortical recording system and a surgical robot intended to place fine electrode threads into cortex. The company’s early medical focus is helping people with severe paralysis control digital devices. 01

The platform

Neuralink’s system has three major pieces:

  1. Implant. A brain implant records neural activity and transmits data wirelessly to external devices.
  2. Surgical robot. A robotic system inserts electrode threads with high precision.
  3. Decoding/software layer. Software maps recorded neural signals to a cursor and other device actions.

In plain terms: record spikes in motor-related cortex → decode intent → move a cursor.

For implant geometry, specifications, images and the 3D model, see the Neuralink N1 device brief.

More stable decoding

On October 1, 2026, Neuralink described self-supervised encoders trained on more than 50,000 hours of neural recordings. It reported decoders working for weeks, reduced calibration for some users, and a cursor-control result of 11.32 bits per second. These results address a central challenge: keeping the interface useful as neural signals drift. 10

Clinical progress

First human implant

The first human implantation took place in January 2024, beginning the company’s human testing program. Early reporting described detection of neuron spikes. 04

Participants and trials

Neura Pod’s October 2026 patient table lists 27+ publicly documented implant recipients. Neuralink’s January 2026 company update had announced 21 participants. 11 07

PRIME investigates computer and robotic-arm control; VOICE studies speech restoration. The N1 remains an investigational device. 08

Surgery and production

Neuralink’s 2026 goals include higher-volume production and greater surgical automation. Reuters reported these plans in January; they describe the intended scaling path. 06

Company and funding

Neuralink now lists its headquarters in Austin, Texas, with operations also in Fremont and South San Francisco. Its LinkedIn page lists 705 associated employee profiles. 02 03

The privately held company does not disclose audited revenue. In June 2025 it raised $650 million in a Series E round at a reported $9 billion valuation. 05

Business Insider reported $29–42 billion valuations for secondary trades in July 2026. By September, Neura Pod estimated an implied value of about $47 billion from Nasdaq Private Market share pricing. These are secondary-market figures, separate from a new company funding round. 09 12

The BCI landscape

Neuralink pairs high-channel-count intracortical recording with a hardware and surgical-automation strategy. Wireless, at-home use is central to its usability goals.

Key questions

  1. Long-term reliability. Signal stability over months and years; electrode encapsulation; durability of threads; explant and replacement strategy.
  2. Surgical throughput and risk. Whether automation reduces time, cost and complication rates at scale.
  3. True information throughput. Channel count is not the same as usable degrees of freedom. The key is stable decoding performance over time.
  4. Clinical expansion. Paralysis and cursor control are the first focus. Speech, vision and other neurological applications require their own clinical evidence.
