Columbia-linked CMOS neural interfaces

This brief links the SCOPe optical probe and BISC electrical surface array without treating them as one interchangeable implant. SCOPe applications cover mouse optical tests and macaque speed decoding.

Paper-grounded affiliations

The 2024 SCOPe paper lists Kenneth Shepard with Columbia electrical engineering, biomedical engineering and neurological surgery. It lists optical-interface collaborators at Columbia, NYU, University of Pennsylvania, Rice, University of Washington and the John B. Pierce Laboratory/Yale. These affiliations are reported from the paper, not used to assign ownership of each circuit or animal study.

Bijan Pesaran is listed with NYU and Penn departments. Jacob Robinson and Ashok Veeraraghavan are listed with Rice electrical engineering. Vincent Pieribone is listed with John B. Pierce Laboratory and Yale. No company relationship or principal-investigator designation is inferred from author order alone.

Two distinct interface families

SCOPe uses SPAD imaging, microLED excitation/stimulation and computational reconstruction of genetically encoded calcium signals. Its demonstrated controller is wired. BISC records electrical surface signals and has separately documented wireless power and telemetry. SCOPe’s optical evidence does not extend BISC’s channel count, and BISC’s wireless link does not make SCOPe wireless.

The SCOPe final abstract is accessible, as is its published supplement. Detailed animal descriptions from the 2023 preprint remain labeled as that version. No new commercialization claim, grant, licence, clinical approval or precise laboratory map coordinate is added.
