NeuroXess (Shanghai): a Chinese implantable BCI company cited in reporting for multi-patient implants and Chinese speech decoding demos.
NeuroXess is a Shanghai-based BCI company mentioned in reporting about China’s push to build an implantable BCI industry.
Reported status (Wired)
Wired reports that:
-
NeuroXess’ CEO Phoenix Peng says the company has implanted six paralyzed patients
-
in three patients, the system was used to decode Chinese speech
-
in others, it enabled thought control of digital devices

Why it’s worth tracking
China’s BCI ecosystem is increasingly driven by:
- centralized policy roadmaps (2027/2030 milestones)
- rapid trial starts
- building a local supply chain (chips, electrodes, decoding algorithms)
NeuroXess is one of the clearest named examples in mainstream reporting with multi-patient implant claims.
Clinical network and manufacturing
NeuroXess says its registration-trial network spans 15 tertiary hospitals in 12 provinces and regions. It also announced a Jiangxi factory with a target of the second half of 2026; that target is not confirmation that the factory has opened. Source: NeuroXess trial and manufacturing announcement.
The national industrial-policy backdrop is the July 23, 2025 opinion, 工信部联科〔2025〕164号, issued jointly by MIIT, NDRC, the education and health ministries, SASAC, CAS and NMPA. It targets internationally advanced electrodes, chips and complete devices by 2027, and two to three globally influential leading firms by 2030. These are policy targets, not milestones achieved by NeuroXess. Source: Government policy text.
The technology
- Status (reported by the company): NeuroXess says its fully implanted, fully wireless system started a GCP registration clinical trial at Huashan Hospital on Jul 8, 2026, which it describes as the first subdural implantable BCI in China to reach registration-stage trials. The company reported a second clinical implant in Apr 2026. The “six patients” figure above is from earlier Wired reporting. Sources (company, in Chinese): 02 and 04
- Triple-F participant update (Sep 30, 2026, company news): NeuroXess disclosed that a participant with a C4 spinal cord injury (pseudonym Jia), implanted with the Triple-F system in April 2026, used brain control with an AI large model and 3D printing to make a figurine and a custom finger sleeve, and used AI smart glasses with its XessOS software to control a hospital bed, lights and home devices. This is a company-reported exploration, not a trial result. Source: 05
- Registration trial record: ClinicalTrials.gov lists NCT07720882 (NeuroXess Technology (Shanghai) as lead sponsor), recruiting, actual start Jul 7, 2026, estimated enrollment 32, estimated primary completion Jan 30, 2027. This is one day earlier than the Jul 8 start the company gives above. Source: 06. Inside BCI (secondary) reports Huashan Hospital as collaborator, a primary endpoint of ARAT response rate at three months, and that the Sep 30 demonstrations are not among the trial’s listed outcomes: 07
